Daniele Ravizza was born in Codogno in the Lombardy region of northern Italy in 1977. By trade he is a furniture restorer and wood carver.
Artistically inclined since he was a youngster, Daniele originally trained as a building surveyor. However his passion for the arts never left him and he always made sure his professional commitments allowed him time to pursue his creative interests, attending courses in painting and wood and wrought iron work and generally exploring the possibilities of a range of artistic media.
A 2004 visit to a furniture restoration workshop proved a turning point. Taking in the workshop’s heady mix of smells and colours, he experienced a kind of epiphany as he gazed up at the shelves stacked high with mysterious, dust-covered boxes, and at the walls hung with old-fashioned work tools that spoke to him of a slow, calm 'craftfulness'.
Subsequently Daniele’s visits to the workshop grew more and more frequent as he worked on developing his skills and knowledge. Finally, in 2012, he decided to leave behind the world of surveying altogether and dedicate himself full time to restoration.
Led by his innate curiosity and a love of aesthetic beauty, he began exploring new methods and techniques, attending courses in wood carving and inlay.
Daniel’s work in its current form began to take shape in 2016. With an initial idea of a contemporary take on traditional methods, he began producing sculptural forms that incorporated an unusual point of view. His ‘Outsider’ for example – as if from behind a glass pane –observes moments of existence unfolding in a place that cannot be reached. Both watcher and watched, the Outsider straddles two parallel dimensions that must inevitably remain separate – estranged from one another, and yet at the same time each a continuation of the other.
90% of the materials Daniele uses are scrap wood, plywood and solid wood from his day-to-day work as a furniture restorer.
Though still an emerging artist, Daniele Ravizza, using the pseudonym Daniel, has nevertheless already taken part in a number of shows and events both in Italy and abroad.
