My work aims to communicate the intensity of the painted figure through pose, gesture and expression. I enjoy mixing traditional oil techniques with modern mediums to create contemporary figurative images. The changing surfaces, materials and compositions act to heighten the figurative image in each piece.
Whilst the figures are painted thinly in oils, the backgrounds use modern light-reflective pigments, taking the subject out of their original context. I direct the figures into theatrical or dramatic poses and gestures. I then paint from photographs and drawing studies to retain the momentary immediacy of the original photo shoot. My most recent paintings have explored the idea of the painted space itself with figures floating timelessly on gold backgrounds. The gold derives from classical paintings, which used the metallic backgrounds to underline the importance of a scene. For me, it emphasises the importance of the endlessness of the painted space to the viewer by taking the subject out of their original context and time.
